Best Ever Matches

Maxtel’s most memorable ever matches

April 2003

1. Solihull Red Diamonds 2-2 Maxtel

A friendly match that proved there is no such thing. Diamonds had dominated throughout, scored twice and even squandered a penalty kick. Enter Dennis Mulverhill to set up a grandstand finish, netting with five minutes to go – then starting a row because he was kicked after he scored. With time quickly running out, Maxtel threw the kitchen sink at them. Biccies came forward for an injury time corner to be taken by Lee. As the ball came in, it was not cleared at the back post. The run from the 'keeper had been timed to perfection and he pounced on the ball to drill it home into the bottom corner with unerring accuracy to salvage a draw that Maxtel barely deserved...

September 2003

2. New Inns Harborne 3-2 Maxtel

A tremendous cup clash with New Inns Harborne. Maxtel had bravely fought back from 2-0 down to get to 2-2 and force extra-time. However, Andy Brown in one of his last games for the club decided to clatter their man and concede a penalty 25 seconds into extra time to send Maxtel crashing out on a golden goal.

3. Maxtel 2-2 Yardley

Maxtel's harsh luck in the cups continued against Yardley. Bob had scored on his first start of the season and the match had been taken to penalties after a bizarre own goal. Maxtel 'keeper Biscuits had come up for a corner and caused confusion, Colin Williams air-shot bamboozled the last man enough for him to head into his own goal. However, this was in vain as Stuart, Matty Beaven and Bob all failed to convert from the spot in the shoot-out in an astonishing display of goalkeeping.

November 2003

4. Maxtel 1-1 Elswick Rangers

Players had responded to Justin's call to "Give it S***" but Biccies took it literally when he took the referee’s whistle against Elswick at home. What followed left a stain on the season as the visitor's completely lost their discipline assaulting first Dennis Mulverhill and then the referee amid ugly scenes. Justin's uncle Gareth was there and became a lifelong Maxtel fan as a result of the "entertainment" on show.  Beetison converted a penalty, Maxtel’s second of the game to share the points after a double sending off. Biccies has never refereed since.

December 2003

5. Guru Ravidass 3-1 Maxtel

Craig scored one of the goals of the season after some sparkling interplay with Bob to put us ahead. Bottom of the table Guru hit back when Lee had the sun in his eyes for their opener. A clanger from Justin in a makeshift back line allowed them to take the lead and a harsh penalty wrapped up the points for the relegation certainties. Dennis got spat on, Guru finished bottom.

September 2004

6. Marsden Lions 0-6 Maxtel United

Matty Branson weighed in with a hat-trick on his first competitive start. Craig scored a brilliant 30 yard strike to make it two and before half time Maxtel turned on the style with a slick passing move that was emphatically finished by Johnny Garratt. Marston got ragged in the second half and the big number six 'chopper' decided the only way to stop Bob was to lie on top of him. Justin was overjoyed at the final whistle with the performance and urged the squad to give themselves a round of applause.

7. Maxtel United 3-2 BCS Social

Maxtel defied the odds to claim a prize scalp of Premier Division 1 outfit BCS Social in the first round of the Coronation Cup. Scott Christie cut inside his marker and drilled home with 18 minutes to take it to extra time. It looked all over as in the second period of extra-time BCS took the lead for the second time. A wonderful ball from Ian was taken off Biccies head by the effervescent Matty Branson who luckily for him found the top corner. Later a magnificent solo effort from the youngster put Maxtel ahead with minutes to go.  Maxtel survived a late bombardment even with nine men after Matty Beaven had seen red for a professional foul.

December 2004

8. Maxtel United 7-3 Oldhouse Athletic

Maxtel raced into a 3-0 lead early doors thanks to a header from Christie another Branno strike after a wonderful through ball and Simon Bentley’s first goal for the club superbly taken. Denis 'white t-shirt man' had to limp off and this immediately triggered panic at the back allowing oldhouse to get back in it. Stuart Whereat, branno and Bob all netted before the real highlight which was Bevo's 45 yard lob which had the goalkeeper couldn't claw out much to the delight of the Club Skipper. Did he mean it? We’ll never know

March 2005

9. Northfield Hare & Hounds 1-2 Maxtel United

Maxtel set up to defend all day with a 4-5-1 against the runaway leaders. Bob shifted a free-kick to bevo who smashed a memorable goal to give Maxtel a shock lead in the 9th minute. Eventually Hare & Hounds pressure paid off when they levelled from a corner. They were now favourites to go on and win it especially when they were given a penalty eight minutes from time. Clarke guessed right for Maxtel in goal to push the ball away in some style. In injury time Maxtel completed a fine win when against the run of play they broke up the right hand side. Substitute Johnny Garratt pounced for his second of the season to send the visitors dancing a jig down the touchline as Gaz was engulfed in a pile-on.

April 2005

10. Queslett 3-1 Maxtel United

Johnny Garratt lit up the pitch throughout and guaranteed a man of the match award with a phenomenal 40 yard strike that flew past a stunned ‘keeper who was only a few yards off his line. Clarkey limped off after Maxtel had clung on for 75 minutes and queslett rattled three late goals in past an exhausted back-line. But Garratt had scored Maxtel’s best ever goal??

October 2005

11. Maxtel 4-1 Rowood

Branno got all four in one of the best individual displays ever in a Maxtel shirt.

December 2005

12. Crusaders 0-4 Maxtel

Maxtel hammered Crusaders on their own patch. Giles bagged a brace (one penalty), Mike got his first for the club with a bullet header and Branno wrapped things up in a sensational first half performance that put Justin in dreamland. This was despite biccies deciding one – nil was enough and wondering how best to run down the remaining 75 minutes.

January 2006

13. Maxtel 3-3 St Annes

Ian glanced home to level after Maxtel fell behind early doors.  The lead changed hands another two times before Maxtel survived the usual bombardment of the last ten minutes

February 2006

14. Marsdon Lions 1-3 Maxtel

Simon Bentley scored twice, Bob got one. Marsdon lost the plot, the ref lost control & the rest was discussed at a county FA hearing three months later.

April 2006

15. Rowood 0-2 Maxtel

Lee took the armband in an emotional final appearance for the club, scored a penalty awarded by referee Billy after 40 seconds & caused them problems all day.

November 2006

16. Maypole Youth 7-1 Maxtel

Scott Christie let us down by not turning up, Bevo took 25 minutes to park his car like a girl, Gaz farted in the ‘changing room’ to gas everyone. To cap it all the shirts were soaking wet. On the pitch, we were so inept we were 3 down inside 15 minutes with some defending so bad it was almost funny.

December 2006

17. Norton 2-3 Maxtel

Si latched onto a sublime through ball to lash home in style. Stu came from nowhere with the tackle of the century to deny a certain equaliser. Gilo leathered in a free-kick round the wall from 30 yards - then nearly did it again. Clarkey made a sensational save that brought the crowd to their feet tipping round superbly then promptly rolled off the pitch injured. Norton threw everything at Maxtel in a classic rearguard action - Maxtel survived the alomo.

February 2007

18. Marsdon Lions 2-3 Maxtel

Branno scored goal of the season – well it should have been but for the irregular voting patterns. Stu had a row with biccies over a disputed throw-in that had led to their equaliser.

April 2007

19. Wagon & Horses 3-2 Maxtel

Wagon dominated, went two up. Maxtel broke & scored 2 in 2 minutes to level at half time. Bob came on at left back & made the winger look stupid half a dozen times. Late on a wagon shot hit the bar crossed the line and bounced out. After an incredible scramble the ball was cleared – unfortunately for wagon biccies – the worst linesman in the league was patrolling that touchline.

20. Maxtel 7-1 New Inns Harborne

Steve Bell scored the first Maxtel hat-trick for 18 months. Colin came on up front but couldn’t break his Maxtel duck.
